Mint family

Dear visitors,

I've just added the Lamiaceae to my photo-library.
Because of their intense smell and delicious taste, many members of the mint family are good friends of the Mediterranean kitchen (i.e. rosemary, basil, oregano).

In Anthroposophy the members of the Lamiaceae are highly appreciated because of their warming aspect which helps the soul to better incarnate.

Also in Hinduism some plants of the Lamicaceae are used for ceremonies.

Ocimum sanctum, the holy basil:
"Its greatest importance to the Hindus is felt in connection with all their religious ceremonies. Every Hindi house in India possesses at least one plant which is looked upon by the Hindu population as one of their domestic duties. The leaves of this herb form one of the principal ingredients of every kind of offering and worship. the wood is also used for all religious purposes."*

"The inhabitants of Malaya Peninsula used to strew its leaves over the graves of their dead persons for the peace and benefit of departed souls."*
