Spurge family

Dear visitors

Euphorbia myrsinites D:Walzen-Wolfsmilch E:Blue Spurge (1)

I've added the spurge family (Euphorbiaceae) today. A huge family with 240 genera and around 6000 species.

One of the interesting members is the "castor oil plant " (Ricinus communis).

From "Murphy's: Homeopathic remedy guide"
"Ricinus has marked action on gastro-intestinal tract. The leaves have an especially powerful action on the breasts and female generative organs. Ricinus communis increases the quantity of milk in nursing women. Vomiting and purging. Languor and weakness. Pale and listless. Very painful cramps in trunk and limbs. Collapse. Convulsions. Anemia. Profound adynamia. Muscular contractions."

A primary sensation of the Euphorbia is the feeling of being "hide-bound" (like Croton tiglium and Hura brasiliensis).
Everything feels too narrow, too tight and they want to find release.

At the end of pregnancy when the baby is due and labour is delayed, midwives commonly give a special drink which consists of "castor oil". This oil, obtained from the beans of Ricinus communis can initiate birth. The oil causes a stimulus to the bowels and causes diarrhoea and that might initiate birth. But may be a deeper reason for that could be the connection to the sensation of family: "being hide-bound", needs to break free.
